PAKISTAN: ART: WAJEEHA ABBASI
This series entitled Adam and Eve by Wajeeha Abbasi is inspired by 17th-century English poet, John Milton’s epic Paradise Lost. The poem "concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton’s purpose, stated in Book I, is to “justify the ways of God to men.”
According to Abbasi, “Eve is the one who is blamed for tempting Adam to have the forbidden fruit whereas Adam was also equally responsible. The visuals represent heaven, the forbidden tree, the snake, the fruit and the desires (as patterns) and the wrath of God…all derived from the biblical story. Furthermore, these also represent the gender roles that have defined the modern human.”
